Students are placed in their designated classes by the Principal and teachers of the school, and are placed according to age, school year and ability. Some advanced students may find they will be dancing up a level. All consideration is taken when placing students into appropriate classes.
Unless done appropriately, advancing the training classes too early will discourage the student. Your trainers are aware of this major point and therefore, it is at the expertise and discretion of the school to decide when a student may train up a level. Your trust and support on this matter is appreciated.
Subject Descriptions: Jazz Jazz can be interpreted and danced in so many ways as the style has developed, grown and changed over the years. There is the common more funky style which we use at in the door entertainment, and there is the traditional style that would be more commonly seen in musicals and more traditional shows. Our style of jazz is such as used by pop stars of today like Britney Spears and Christina etc
This subject consists of rhythmic warm up, stretch and flex, coordination, turns, kicks, jumps and choreography.
Shoes required are black jazz shoes. Clothing for jazz – black Lycra dance wear. Hair tied back.
Urban Dance This is a funky style of dance. It covers R’n’B, Hip Hop, & funk. Style would be commonly seen by performers such as Usher, Missy Elliot, and Justin Timberlake.
Sneakers or jazz boots. Shoes are a must for this class. Hip Hop style clothing is OK for this class, so if coming from a jazz class, grab your cap, wrist band and baggy hood.
Tap Tap dance is a style of dancing where you wear special shoes with metal plates on the toes and heels. The dancer produces a beat with their feet. The dance is very rhythmic and as well as being visual. Tap Dance originated in the United States in the 19th Century, and is now popular all around the world. It recently gained a new popularity by performances such as Tap Dogs. However, our modern style tap adventured from the tradition style which was popular in choreography for Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers, and Shirley Temple.
Black Tap Shoes. Black Lycra or comfy clothes.
Contemporary This class consists of building the technique and strength of a dancer. Increasing flexibility, improving turns, kicks, and jumps. Contemporary is a lyrical form of Jazz, that also can have a modern abstract style. This is a very popular style seen on the show 'So you think you can dance'
Foot thongs, jazz shoes or boots, or ballet shoes. Shoes for the concert will depend on style but will most likely be foot thongs.
Black Lycra dance wear, pink ballet stockings ok.
Ballet A graceful and beautiful form of dance. Strengthening, and extremely disciplined, and technique based. Descended from the court spectacles of Italy and France, Ballet is a theatrical dance form consisting of codified movements and a training system designed to produce specific aesthetic lines. Two defining characteristics, which require years of highly specialized training, are the use of “Turn-out” of the legs from the hip so that the knees and feet point outwards and “En Pointe” through which the ballerina rises onto the tips of her toes. Another more comprehensive definition comes from Louis Horst & Carroll Russell, "a secure and powerful centre of gravity in an upright back from which the brilliant movements of arm and legs give an unreal and superhuman impression."
Ballet shoes. Leotard, with pink ballet socks or stockings.
Lyrical Lyrical dance is a modern dance form which is a combination of Jazz and Ballet. Lyrical requires excellent technique to perform, and a structured yet free body expression, moreover, the dancer must be well aware of facial expressions, essentially acting, to properly perform a Lyrical dance piece. The goal of the lyrical dancer is to convey the emotion of a song’s lyrics. Intense emotional expression of the face and body are necessary to tell a story that evolves along the lines of the song to which Lyrical dance is performed. The origins of Lyrical dance are unclear. The form is most often seen in live shows of contemporary music such as Cirque du Soleil. Foot thongs, Bare feet, Ballet shoes or soft leather jazz shoes are suitable for this class. Black lycra dance wear, or ballet tights and leotard.
